Ven & Doug Viridem; the unsuspecting leads that take on the gruesome mystery which kicks off the Overlap saga. By nature, these two had to be identical. Same face. Same hair, skin, eye color. Same height, build, etc. However, I also knew that they needed to each stand on their own as individuals. Different hair styles and clothing. How can I convey individuality via facial expressions alone? Ven quickly slotted into the more classic damaged, old school detective role, whereas Doug took a bit more time for me to nail down. Eventually, I found the style and personality that fit him. He’s trendy and modern. More willing to crack jokes than his brother, but no less competent at solving a mystery. Part of the challenge (and the fun) of writing Ven and Doug in a world of all-twins has been discovering both their differences and their similarities and playing with those traits to see how they each react as the story’s events unfold.
